Can we talk about laundry for a hot second? Admittedly it isn’t one of my favorite things to do around the house. I think the socks do it for me. I’m convinced they conspire together to play a never ending game of hide-and-seek.
It’s all fun and games, but what I really want to talk about today is why it’s important to use safe laundry detergent. Back when I first started this journey to natural living, laundry detergent and dryer sheets were at the top of my list to ditch and switch. Why?
Did you know that our skin absorbs the chemicals (harmful or otherwise) from clothes? That’s right. The synthetic chemicals in conventional detergents and dryer sheets sit on top of our clothes, and then we absorb them all day long. Yikes.
Scan your Laundry Detergent or your dryer sheets ingredient label. Google some of those ingredients. (You’ll want to look for “Harmful effects of _______”) Are you surprised?
A common ingredient in detergents is Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), which has been linked to irritation of the skin and eyes, organ toxicity, developmental/reproductive toxicity, neurotoxicity, endocrine disruption, and biochemical or cellular changes, possible mutations, and cancer. There is some controversy over whether SLS is harmful or not, but I like to take the more cautious route: if there is any question that it could cause the things listed above, I’m going to avoid it. What about you?
