Essential Oils 101

Essential Oils 101:

Essential oils are a healthy, safe and are an effective way to help with many ailments that so commonly affect us on a daily basis. Today’s lifestyles don’t always create optimal conditions for physical and emotional wellness. Poor diet, lack of exercise, and an overabundance of environmental toxins can leave the body unbalanced and diminish energy levels. Anything from weight management, to cleansing your body and mind, Young Living Essentials Oils support every system of the body. Using essential oils and essential oil-infused supplements can provide the targeted solutions you need to restore balance and feel your very best.

Essential oils…

  • Are Immune enhancing
  • Support the body’s natural defenses
  • Are more powerful than a dried herb and more extensive than vitamins and minerals
  • Aid in maintaining normal cellular regeneration
  • Are mood elevating, and boost stamina and energy
  • Are high in antioxidants
  • Are oxygenating
  • Help you relax and manage stress and frustration
  • Improve mental clarity
  • Promote overall health, vitality, and longevity

What are Essential Oils?

3 - what-are-Essential-Oils-border

What is an essential oil? Essential oils are the life blood of the plant that initiates regeneration into the cells. Anything that our blood does for us is what the essential oils do for the plant. They carry nutrients and oxygen to the different organs in our body and can effectively combat the damaging effects of toxins, impurities, and harmful substances in and around our body.

It’s a non-fatty, highly volatile (quickly evaporating) liquid that is distilled (removed) from the plant with steam or pressure. It’s the ‘immune system’ of a plant. We are able to receive many benefits from essential oils. Their molecules are so tiny, that our bodies can absorb them very quickly. That means they begin helping us almost immediately!

Quality Matters:

Now that we have discussed what essential oils are, you might be wondering the difference between Young Living Essential Oils and the oils found in your local health food stores. What is sold there I cannot attest to and I want to 4 - genuine-vs-syntheticmake it clear that I am ONLY TALKING ABOUT Young Living’s Essential Oils. If an oil bottle label says “Topical”, “For External Use Only”, “Do Not Take Internally”, or “Do Not Ingest” then there’s your red flag that it has been adulterated and is not safe.

Understand that if you go out to a garden and pick a peppermint leaf off of the plant, it is safe to eat. If the oil was 100% pure as it says it is, then you should be able to ingest it. Do not be fooled! There IS definitely a difference between a $6 Lavender and a $23.50 (wholesale cost) Young Living bottle of Lavender. Personally, when I grab my bottle of Lavender to put on a burn (on either myself or my child), I need to know for sure it is the highest possible quality, and is going to be safe and effective.

How To Use Oils:

How To Use Oils Topically

Because of their molecular structure, Essential oils are rapidly absorbed by the skin. Applying the oils to the Vita-Flex points on a foot that relates to organ system will activate their reflex. Applying the oils to your feet is a great way to absorb the oils into your body. You can also bathe in the oils. It is best to mix 15-20 drops with Epsom salt in a separate bowl, and then pour mixture into the bath tub.

How To Use Direct Inhalation

Fragrance is the substance of memories. Research shows that when inhaling the pure constituents in these oils, can stimulate the olfactory receptors and activate regions in the brain’s limbic system associated with memory, emotion, and state of mind. Hence, in less than a second, a scent has the power to activate a number of physical and emotional responses. This causes the pituitary gland to be stimulated and release chemical messages that travel via the blood to your glands and organs that create physical body responses. That is why inhaling the oils can have a great effect on emotions. The only way to reach that part of your brain is not orally, but through your nose.

How And Why To Diffuse Oils

Harsh chemical formulas aren’t your only home cleansing option. Enjoy peace of mind without compromise when diffusing Young Living Essential Oils. By diffusing, it helps to purify and cleanse the air from environmental impurities including cigarette smoke and other disagreeable odors.10 - How to Use Diffuse

75% of American homes use synthetic air fresheners that contain numerous amounts of chemical agents that have been linked to cancer. Formaldehyde is in air fresheners. The olfactory nerve is a pathway to the brain, which when it is being hit with formaldehyde, it will disrupt the endocrine system. It actually deadens the nerve, which decreases your nose from being able to smell as well. Formaldehyde is the #1 cancer causing chemical and is what you are embalmed with at the morgue.

How To Use Oils Internally

Young Living has recently launched a new line of essential oils to make it easier for consumers to determine which oils can be used for consumption. The Vitality line is still all the same oils but will have differently labeling. Internal11 - How to Use Internally use of Young’s Living’s Vitality essential oils can help support the systems of the body, and is a great way to help maintain optimal health! To use internally, add a drop or two to your recipes or a glass of water, tea, or juice. Be sure to use glass – never plastic or Styrofoam.  You can also make homemade capsules along with a few drops of olive oil. Add the top of the capsule, shake and take with water.

What is a Carrier Oil?

When applying essential oils topically, it is best to always use a carrier oil. A carrier oil is a vegetable oil, such as Olive, Grapeseed, and Coconut oil, that can be used to dilute essential oils. Carrier oils ensure that essential oils applied topically are comfortable to the skin. Dilution with a carrier oil does not dilute the effect of the essential oil. In fact, it prevents waste due to excessive application. Follow diluting instructions on the bottle.

12a - Carrier Oils

We use carrier oils with an essential oil when an essential oil feels too “hot” on the skin. “Hot oils” are oils that can cause a hot or warming sensation when applied to the skin. Examples of “hot” oils and blends include Cinnamon, Clove, Lemongrass, Oregano, Thyme, Exodus II™, and Thieves®. For some people, Peppermint’s cooling sensation can be too intense and may need to be diluted with a carrier oil.

ALWAYS dilute with babies and children, as well as for those with sensitive skin. My favorite carrier oils are coconut (both solid or liquid form) and jojoba oil. Any fatty, plant-based oil will do the job though!

12b - Dilution Guidelines

Precautions and Safety Tips

13 - Quick Tips for Safe Use

  • Do not put essential oils directly in eyes or ear canal, it will burn. If this happens, apply a carrier oil. Do NOT use water!
  • Olive oil, Coconut oil and Grapeseed oil are considered “carrier oils” (best to use organic).
  • If an essential oil feels hot to the skin, put a carrier oil on the area and it will bring relief.
  • Pregnant women, epileptics, and those with high blood pressure should consult their doctors as there are a few oils that should be avoided.
  • Citrus oils are photosensitive, so if applied topically, avoid being in the sun for a long period of time.
  • If you are allergic to anything, always read the label.

13a - Read the Label

What is the difference between single oils and blends?

Singles are oils made from only one plant, blends are several oils combined in one bottle that have been expertly blended. Both support a variety of body systems.

Essential Oils and the 9 Body Systems

This is a great chart to refer to, especially as we cover the single oils and blends in the Premium Starter Kit. 15 - 9 Systems of the body

The Premium Starter Kit

Now let’s dig into the essential oils you will find in the Premium Starter Kit! Young Living put these 10 oils together so you can do just about everything with this kit! First I will start with the Single Oils. Young Living’s Vitality line has made an appearance in the Premium Starter Kits so I will discuss the Vitality line when I talk about certain oils.

Lavender/Lavender Vitality

Lavender oil is a favorite essential oil, and is extremely versatile. Diffuse lavender oil at bedtime as 17 - Lavender.pngits aroma has a calming effect and can help promote restful sleep. It’s great for all ages – from tiny new babies to the elderly! Diffuse lavender oil in the spring months to give your home a springtime ambiance. The aroma of lavender oil can sooth stressful moments, and diffusing lavender oil promotes a peaceful ambiance. You can almost never go wrong with lavender oil! Instead of using perfumed dryer sheets, you can make a lavender oil spray and lightly mist linens and clothing fresh out of the dryer.

Lavender is truly an essential oil for skin health. Apply topically on side of any type of skin irritation, neat or diluted. Apply lavender oil diluted in coconut oil or aloe vera gel topically to help soothe summertime skin.

Use lavender oil in your bath at home for a lovely, relaxing home spa experience! Dilute a few drops of lavender in Epsom salts, and then add to the bath water. The combination of the lavender oil and magnesium in the Epsom salts will help relax your muscles and gently cleanse your body as they carry your stresses and tensions far away! And for a relaxing massage dilute lavender, 20/80 or more in carrier oils such as almond oil or Young Living’s V6 oil and apply.

Young Living’s Lavender Vitality oil can make a great addition to beverages such as homemade lavender lemonade, desserts such as lavender-infused shortbread cookies, and can even be taken internally in homemade capsules to support the body in a myriad of ways!

Lavender is one of my absolute favorite oils and I am never without it! My favorite uses include: on cuts/scrapes/bruises, calming/improved sleep, burns/sunburns, and our number one use is for seasonal discomforts! How do you use Lavender?

Did you know? It takes 27 square feet of Lavender plants to make on 15ml bottle of Lavender oil.

Peppermint/Peppermint Vitaltiy

Peppermint oil has a fresh, energizing aroma that is perfect to inhale before a workout, before taking a test, or on road trips – any time a boost to your performance is desired. Inhale peppermint oils before a meal and you may find you feel like eating less!

18 - Peppermint

Apply a couple of drops of peppermint oil on your shoulders or feet and follow with a cool, wet washcloth to help yourself stay cool on a hot summer day. Apply a drop or two of peppermint oil diluted in V6 oil or other carrier oil on muscles after exertion. Massage a drop or two of peppermint oil on temples, forehead, and back of neck to soothe everyday tensions and discomforts.

Add a drop of Peppermint Vitality oil to water to support healthy digestion. Add a drop of peppermint oil to Young Living’s chocolate Pure Protein Complete shake to make a “chocolate thin mint” shake! You can also take a few drops internally in homemade capsules to help optimize digestive health.

Peppermint is probably my second favorite oil. We use it almost daily, in fact four times today! Some people consider Peppermint to be a “hot” oil, as some will experience a tingling or burning if you use it without a carrier oil.  Some of my favorite uses include: headache, stomachaches, stuffy nose, muscle aches, a mid afternoon pick me up when I am feeling sleepy. Peppermint is very stimulating, and can be applied on top of other oils to help them penetrate the skin more deeply. How do you use Peppermint?

Did you know? It takes 1lb of raw peppermint material to make 1 15ml bottle of Peppermint oil.

Lemon/Lemon Vitality

Lemon oil is one of the top essential oils that you will be glad to have in your home for dozens of household and personal care uses. Diffuse lemon oil to purify the air and fill the air with a cheery aroma. 19 - LemonUse lemon oil diluted in water and white vinegar to clean windows and mirrors. Apply on the feet to help soothe calluses and bunions. Apply neat or diluted on the skin to clear up blemishes. Apply a drop of Lemon oil in your hair mixed with conditioner to give your hair that extra shine.

Add a drop or two of Young Living’s Lemon Vitality oil to water for a refreshing drink that gently purifies and cleanses the body. Todd a few drops of lemon oil with steamed green beans or broccoli along with salt, pepper, and olive oil for a delicious and nutritious side dish! Add a few drops of lemon oil to hummus or yogurt and serve with raw veggies for a healthy snack. Add to desserts and smoothies in place of lemon zest and be prepared for a healthy zing!

Lemon oil smells so amazing. It is a ‘hungry’ oil, and dissolves anything that is petroleum based (see video clip here). It is super important to only use glass if you add lemon to drinking water. It is also a photo-sensitive oil, which means it will cause you to get a sunburn if its applied to an area exposed to the sun. Some of my favorite uses for lemon include: Works wonders with getting off sticker residue, cleaning, bleach alternative, helps with phlegm and coughing, I put a drop in my water for cleansing. I also diffuse as it can be very calming along with purifying the air. How do you use Lemon?

Did you know? It takes 75 lemons to make one 15ml bottle of Lemon oil.

Frankincense/Frankincense Vitality

Frankincense is one of the gifts to the Christ child, and it is a very powerful oil fit for a king. Diffuse or inhale Frankincense oil to promote a feeling of mediation and a prayerful atmosphere. Inhaling Frankincense can help promote a state of peace as well as a happy mood. Put a drip of frankincense oil on your hands, rub them together and inhale the delicious aroma!20 - Frankincense

Apply a couple of drops of Frankincense to the chest followed by a hot or warm wet washcloth. This opens the senses and is soothing and grounding especially in the fall and winter months.

Frankincense oil is also an incredibly powerful oil for the skin. Apply a drop of Frankincense diluted in quarter teaspoon of olive oil or a natural moisturizer to help reduce redness, smooth wrinkles, and brighten the complexion.

Young Living’s Frankincense Vitality oil is a fantastic dietary supplement that helps support normal cellular health – a crucial part of your overall health. Add 2-3 drops of frankincense vitality to a glass of purified water or a shot glass of NingXia Red, or take in homemade capsules.

The earthy balsamic scent of Frankincense has calming properties and can increase spirituality and inner strength. With comforting properties that help focus the mind and overcome stress and despair, it is the holy anointing oil in the Middle East, where it has been used in religious ceremonies for centuries. Some of my favorite uses of Frankincense include: skin care; I have created my own face moisturizers, supporting my immune system when I am sick, and also diffuse for mediation and relaxation. How do you use your Frankincense?

Did you know? Frankincense is distilled from the gum or resin of the Boswellia tree.

Copaiba/Copaiba Vitality

Copaiba is pronounced “Ko-pah-ee-bah”. Copaiba is a potent essential oil from Brazil with a history of soothing properties. Traditionally used to aid digestion and support the body’s natural response to injury or irritation. Copaiba has the highest amount of beta-caryophyllene of any essential oil and supports overall wellness.

21 - Copaiba

To support your overall wellness you add 1-3 drops of Copaiba Vitality to your water, tea, or shot glass of Young Living’s nutrient infusion NingXia Red.

Copaiba has a very earthy smell and has come to be one of my favorite smelling essential oils. It is gentle and needs to be diluted on only the most sensitive skin. Some of my favorite uses for Copaiba include: achy muscles and headaches. If you want to know more about the potential benefits of Copaiba, do a search at pubmed.

Did you know? Copaiba resin is collected from the Brazilian rain forest and then steam distilled.

Reference Guides

Before we dive in, I want to talk you about reference guides. A good quality reference guide is very important to own. I believe it is essential to be proactive and educate yourself. Here are a few of the reference guides I currently use and I keep adding to this collection. You can never do enough research!

ORAC Level

ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbent Capacity. Knowing the ORAC level of different foods and oils is great, because the higher the ORAC level of something, the better it is at helping boost your immune system, getting rid of nasty free-radicals, and keeping healthy. Here are two charts for your reference.

25 - ORAC Chart #125a - ORAC Chart #2

Alright…Let’s get back to the oils from our starter kit. These next few oils are considered blends. First up is Thieves essential oil.

Thieves/Thieves Vitality

Thieves contains cinnamon bark, rosemary, clove, lemon, and eucalyptus oils, and was inspired by the legend of four 15th century thieves in France who formulated an aromatic blend composed of cloves, rosemary, and other botanicals to use while robbing victims of those who died from the plaque. Diffuse Thieves oil in your home to help purify the air. Rub a few drops on the arches of your feet or over the glands in the neck.

26 - Thieves

Thieves oil is perfect for use in natural oral care. Apply a drop on gums or add a drop to a small amount of backing soda mixed with water as a fantastic natural toothpaste that will leave your teeth clean and your mouth smelling fresh.

There is no better essential oil to use in household cleaning than Thieves oil. Dilute in a spray bottle with a natural liquid soap and water, and use it to clean all surfaces in your home from your kitchen counter tops and floors to the bathtub and toilet bowl. Sprinkle on some baking soda if additional scrubbing action is desired.

Thieves blend can be found in many of Young Living’s most popular products and is a safe, natural alternative to harsh chemicals and cleaners. There is a whole line of Thieves products including, oral care, hand wash, a household cleaner that you can use on literally everything such as, fruits and veggies, your pets, counters, windows, mirrors (and it doesn’t smear) and toilets…all in one cleaner! You do not have to worry about chemicals of any kind! How many cleaners can do ALL of that? Thieves Household Cleaner is very economical and I highly recommend!

Because it is so potent, Young Living has included Thieves in its Vitality supplement line of essential oils. Add a drop of Thieves Vitality oil to water to support immune function. You can also add a drop of Thieves oil to a mug of hot water along with

1Tbsp of raw apple cider vinegar and 1 Tbsp raw honey for an invigorating, immune-supportive beverage! You can also add several drops of Thieves oil along with an equal amount of olive oil to homemade capsules and take them internally.

My favorite uses are: apply daily on the bottoms of your feet to boost immune systems, a drop on my tongue or in a cup of hot tea when I have a sore throat, and I diffuse Thieves to clean the air. Weber State University in Ogden, UT found in 1997 that when diffused for 12 minutes, there was a 90% reduction of airborne micro organisms! After 20 minutes there was a kill rate of 99.3%. This is a powerful and wonderful smelling blend.

Did you know? Cinnamon was so highly prized by the ancient Greeks that they regarded it as a gift fit for royalty and gave it as offerings to the gods.

DiGize/DiGize Vitality

DiGize contains ginger, anise, fennel, peppermint, tarragon, juniper, lemongrass, and patchouli oils. It includes naturally occurring constituents like menthol, citrol, and zingiberene. DiGize supports an already healthy digestion and soothes stomach discomfort. DiGize is a powerful essential oil that is great to apply on the feet, belly, or wrists.27 - DiGize

You can use Young Living’s DiGize Vitality oil as a potent digestive-supportive dietary supplement. Add a drop or two of DiGize oil to water or after eating a heavy meal or when travelling abroad, or take in a homemade capsules with an equal amount of olive oil.

This blend does not smell pleasant, but it really works! We use it for stomach aches and diarrhea. It can also help ‘get things moving’ as well.

Did you know? DiGize is an important ingredient in Young Living’s Thieves Fruit and Veggie Soak.

Purification

Another oil with a myriad of uses around the house is Purification oil. Diffuse Purification oil to naturally improve the aroma and quality of the air in your home without all those nasty chemicals. Purification oil can help clear the air of cooking smells, paint and other chemicals, bathroom and litter box smells, and more! Make a homemade Purification oil spray and keep it in the bathroom or close to a litter box to neutralize28 - Purication odors. You can also spray it on stinky sneakers or in musty closets. Just add about 20 drops of Purification oil to a 4 oz. glass spray bottle filled with distilled water, shake, and spray!

Do you like to spend time outside? Next time you venture into the great outdoors, spray your skin and clothing with the Purification oil spray. Dab Purification oil need on any outdoor skin irritations if you forget to wear it in the first place.

Purification oil contains pure citronella, rosemary, lemongrass, tea tree, lavandin, and myrtle essential oils. This blend is supportive to the skin and immune system. I use Purification as a bug repellent, on bug/spider bites, cuts; rub it on the outside of my throat and chest at the first sign of sickness, getting rid of odors, especially after cooking with some very fragrant spices. I have even made my own homemade Febreeze.

Did you know? Citronella is a member of the lemongrass family and is used topically to help enjoy the outdoors annoyance free!

RC

This next oil I love to diffuse is R.C. oil, which contains a few varieties of eucalyptus oils, and is great to diffuse to provide a stimulating, soothing aroma that people especially love in the cold winter months. R.C. also contains myrtle, pine, marjoram, lavender, Cyprus, tsuga, and peppermint. R.C. stands for Respiratory Control, and is supportive of the respiratory system. You can also add a couple of drops of R.C. oil to a bowl of hot water, 29 - RCand then lean over the bowl with a towel over your head for several minutes. You can also place a drop of R.C. on your pillow before bed. For babies and young children, you can apply a drop to bedding but make sure it’s several inches from where they lay their head.

Rub a drop of R.C. oil neat or diluted over the chest in the winter months. Dilute for children. You can dab a bit over the cheekbones, avoiding the eyes. R.C. will invigorate and stimulate, and you won’t want to be without it! Avoid using R.C. oil on the faces of babies and young children, as its eucalyptus aroma can be too strong. Apply a drop or two of R.C. oil on the balls of the feet and toes where the reflexes for the lungs and sinuses are located.

We use R.C. on a daily basis by diffusing, put on chest and feet during colds and for seasonal support. It helps open up our sinuses.

PanAway

Next up is PanAway oil. Massage a few drops of PanAway neat or diluted into the muscles after exercise. The larger the area you are massaging with PanAway, the more you should dilute it. Apply a drop on the temples and neck to cool and soothe minor tensions. Apply PanAway along the arches of the feet where the s30 - PanAwaypine reflexes are. Next, stimulate these areas with Vitaflex or reflexology.

PanAway contains peppermint, wintergreen, clove, and helichrysum essential oils. Peppermint oil is naturally high in menthol and wintergreen oil contains methyl salicylate, clove contains eugenol, and helichrysum contains alpha-pinene.

PanAway also had a childproof cap because ingesting high amounts of wintergreen can be harmful. This blend smells minty, so it’s a safety precaution. All four blends are very supportive to the muscular and skeletal system and are very soothing on achy muscles and areas of discomfort. I use PanAway on my forehead, temples, or neck for a headache and directly on muscles for aches and pains. This is very beneficial for relief of achy joints.

Did you know? PanAway was created by Gary Young to help support the ligaments in his leg.

Stress Away

Last but not least, Stress Away which comes as a BONUS when you purchase your Premium Starter kit!31 - Stress Away

It is a natural solution created to combat normal stresses that creep into everyday life by reducing mental rigidity. It maintains equilibrium, helps induce relaxation and reduces occasional nervous tensions.  Diffuse or inhale Stress Away oil. Apply on the chest, neck, wrists, or feet to help one cope with stress more effectively. Use with Epsom salts in the bath or diluted 20/80 in a massage at the end of a hectic day to help stresses melt right away! Stress Away also makes a wonderful natural perfume.

I love Stress Away, especially the lovely aroma. We use this oil every day to help promote calm and restless sleep.
